All throughout the summer and until September of 1943, cultural workers were joining the Partisans in droves. In August 1943, at Base 21, the first group of cultural workers gathered: poet Karel Destovnik ‐ Kajuh, dancer Marta Pavlin ‐ Brina, the head of Division's technical department and illustrator‐sculptor Janez Weiss ‐ Belač, Savo Vrtačnik ‐ Krn, composer of the Division anthem Sveto Marolt ‐ Špik and journalist, editor of the Division magazine Voice of Freedom Ladislav Kiauta. Later a few others joined the group: the make-up artist of the Ljubljana Opera Lujo Jakel, priest and religous consultant for the headquarters Jože Lampret and Russians Tamara and Mihailo. Their task was to organize meetings across the Dolenjska, Notranjska and Primorska regions as well as Bela Krajina. While the 14th Division was on the march to Štajerska, Kajuh and Brina received an invitation from Črnomlje to join the SNT, which they declined. The life of the cultural group was not vastly different to the life of the fighters; the heavy offensive claimed the lives of Belač and Kajuh, Špik was shot as a hostage, and Brina suffered severe frostbite on both her legs.
